I had the pleasure of spending late yesterday afternoon and evening on the Upper Credit with a young guy who is thinking of pursuing a career as a fly fishing guide. We met at one of the shows this past winter and after a few false starts were finally able to connect. We entered the Forks of the Credit Provincial Park from Dominion Street and as we walked we talked about what ingredients are necessary for someone to become a good fly fishing guide. He asked a lot of questions – as did I – about the people we have met on water over the years and the list of ingredients quickly percolated down to the following:
- a competent fly fisher
- an entertaining teacher
- knowledgeable of the area
- ethical in his fishing practices
- understanding of local hatches
- a keen focus on customer service
I related a few stories (some of which have appeared on this blog) and we agreed at the end of the conversation that the one very important ingredient that makes a good fly fishing guide is somewhat intangible. After tossing around a few suggestions we decided that the difference between a good guide and a mediocre one is similar to the difference between a silent bus driver and an entertaining tour guide: they will both get you where you want to go but the trip is much more interesting when you are with someone who enjoys teaching and making you smile…
Remember that if you book your next guide or fly fishing vacation through WILSON’S we give you a gift certificate worth 10% of the trip value to spend in our store !
