As mentioned yesterday, I have been spending a bit of time fly fishing in and around the Forks of the Credit of late and have had the pleasure of rediscovering some pools I have not fished for some time. There is one pool in what is known as “the Meadow” in Forks of the Credit Provincial Park that many know because of the bench installed by the Greg Clark Chapter of Trout Unlimited Canada in memory of Phil Kettle. I had not been to this stretch of the river for some time and was very pleased to see how the river has changed for the better. Trout Unlimited Canada has long been one of the leading stewards of this area and the trees they have planted over the years to provide better riparian cover have taken foot and blossomed. While inconvenient for novice fly fishers, this work and other projects further upstream are having a direct and positive impact on fish habitat as evidenced by the increasing number of fish being caught in this area. It is also worth noting that I was VERY pleased to see a Conservation Officer on the river checking licenses and ensuring that anglers were aware that the area is a fish sanctuary where catch & release is mandatory (I understand CO’s are now patrolling the Upper Credit on a very frequent basis – cudos to the MNR !). Now if I could only find out where those big browns are hiding…
